Piston Speed Calculation Tool

This is a tool to calculate piston speed.

You can calculate it from stroke length × RPM.

Piston speed is 0 m/s at the top dead center (TDC) and bottom dead center (BDC). In other words, the piston comes to a complete stop. The maximum piston speed occurs at the midpoint between these two points, and this calculation tool is designed to find that speed.

Generally, the piston speed increases from large diesel engines to small diesel and gasoline engines, with motorsport engines having the highest speeds.

In the past, 21 m/s was considered the limit, but improvements in precision and material limits have allowed for engines that exceed this speed today.

In a four-stroke engine, the limits of components such as valve springs usually come before reaching the piston speed limit, making it less common; however, our site caters to such needs as well.
